Ok – I’m woke and that’s no joke. I’m at least vaguely aware – like ‘woke-light’, I guess. I am in such desperate need of Christmas I can’t even joke about it. (See what I did there?)

Netflix has a holiday program, “Holiday Home Makeover – Mr. Christmas”. Want to talk about conspicuous consumption? Want to talk about glaringly over-done? Want to talk about “Look at me and what I have”? No; me either, although those things are strongly represented in this program. But that’s not my problem right now.

My problem is … tell me – are there any heterosexual designers anymore or have they gone the way of the do-do bird? I have no problem whatsoever with homosexual men – one of my best friends is and he’s so very dear to me. But don’t regular guys have taste, have ‘an eye for decoration’, have a sense of what goes with what that makes both more than they are alone?

It of course occurred to me – Chevy Chase in Christmas Vacation. I can’t watch the movie; it’s too painful, I can’t go there, but I’d have been dead to not know the story AND the big house display. So that’s it? That’s all there is? I have to decide between Chevy Chase and this Mr. Christmas guy? I guess I’m going to have to learn to live with a slightly dated, slightly tarnished Christmas. Oh, well.

There’s a whole other world out there, folks. This weekend, I stumbled on a couple of videos that really opened my eyes. And many thanks to my friend Birtwistle who is a shoe man and very knowledgeable. For those with enough cash, shoes are not what you and I think they are. Birt is British so I shared this video with him

I have always been of the opinion (which, as usual, was wrong) that a shoe is a shoe is a shoe. They aren’t. There’s more than long enough, or wide enough – how about arch? How about instep? Mass makers get it right a good deal of the time but this is the dream – an attainable dream if you’ve got the cash. I thoroughly enjoyed the video, learned a lot, and was ready to move on when I came across this video. Because America is a melting pot, there are few things we can point to as iconic, and here is one.

Yeeha, y’all!

The more serious minded of you (and you know who you are!) may be interested to know that Hillsdale College has a huge selection of courses you can take online for free. I took Theology 101 and the course The Constitution. They come in separate lessons and you can view them at your own pace. For those who have to know, you can opt to take the test at the end of each lesson – or not, as might be the choice for the faint-hearted. They are presented just as they would be in class and are roughly an hour long. I highly recommend them – if you’re into that sort of thing. (wink)
